Field Hockey terms (that you need to know)

Short Corner: also known as the "Penalty Corner". Offensive free hit from the endline, 10 yards from the goal, usually following a foul inside the striking circle. Offensive players must be outside the striking circle until the ball is hit, and the offense must control the ball before it can shoot. The defense is allowed five players behind the end line; all other defenders must be behind the center line. A penalty corner ends when the defense takes possession of the ball, the ball crosses over the 5-yard mark outside the striking circle, or the ball exits the striking circle twice.

Tackle: Defensive effort to take the ball away from an opponent.

Indoor Field Hockey Update

USA Field Hockey recently held its U-19 Girls National Indoor Tournament (NIT) in Richmond, VA. Both local indoor clubs, Team Golden Triangle and Pittsburgh Venom, fielded teams at the tournament. Mt. Lebanon sophomore Elena Engel and seniors Pfeifer Hill and Georgia Eson participated.

NIT tournaments for U-14 and U-16 girls were also held recently. If your daughter participated in one of these tournaments, send us an email at mtlebanonfieldhockey@gmail.com and we will get her name in our newsletter next month.
